Dementia & Alzheimer's

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease affect memory, communication, and the ability to process surroundings. For parishioners living with these conditions, attending Mass can present challenges—unfamiliar faces, changes in routine, or difficulty following the liturgy can cause anxiety or confusion. Caregivers, too, may worry about how their loved one will be received.

A sensory-friendly Mass offers an environment where these challenges are met with understanding. The calmer pace, clearer structure, and compassionate welcome help reduce stress for both the person and their caregiver.

How can we be more welcoming?

  • Be patient and kind. A warm smile or gentle greeting can create comfort and trust.
  • Offer guidance without rushing. Helping someone follow along can be a blessing.
  • Respect caregivers. Offer encouragement and practical support.
  • Remember dignity. Even if memory fades, the person’s worth as a child of God never changes.

By welcoming parishioners with dementia and Alzheimer’s into our worship, we proclaim that they are—and always will be—beloved members of our parish family.
