Liturgical Ministers and Volunteers Resources

Helping every minister serve with joy and purpose.

Ministry Scheduler Pro

Do you volunteer at Mass? Perhaps you lector, serve on the altar, usher, or perform sacristan duties. You can update your schedule, ask for substitutes, or volunteer to fill in on Ministry Pro.

Altar Servers

Altar servers assist the clergy in the celebration of the Mass. Because the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith, altar serving is an incredibly important job. It is to be done with reverence and dignity. The altar servers lead as a great example to our community through their actions: praying, singing, looking alert, and performing their duties at the appropriate times.

Lectors

Lectors serve the Church by proclaiming the Word of God during the liturgy with clarity, reverence, and understanding. Their role is more than reading aloud—it is to help the faithful encounter God’s living Word and be nourished by it. Through prayerful preparation and thoughtful delivery, lectors make Scripture come alive for the assembly and inspire deeper faith and reflection.

Extraordinary Ministers

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priest in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass and, when needed, bring Communion to the sick or homebound. In this sacred ministry, laypersons live out their baptismal call to share in Christ’s priesthood and bring His presence to others. This service reflects the unity of the Church and the dignity of every believer’s role in the liturgy, carried out with reverence, humility, and prayerful devotion.

Sacristans

The sacristan prepares and cares for all items needed for the celebration of the liturgy, including the vessels, vestments, books, candles, bread, and wine. Working mostly behind the scenes, the sacristan ensures that everything is ready for Mass and other services. Through this quiet and prayerful service, the sacristan helps create a reverent environment for worship and reminds the assembly to prepare their hearts to encounter Christ.

Ushers

Ushers serve as ministers of hospitality, welcoming parishioners and visitors as they enter the church, helping them find seats, assisting with collections, and maintaining a reverent atmosphere during worship. As the first faces people encounter, ushers represent the warmth and unity of the parish community, offering a spirit of welcome and service. They also provide assistance when needed and ensure the church remains orderly before, during, and after Mass.
