Mental Health and Worship
Mental health is an important part of our overall well-being. Conditions such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health challenges can affect how a person experiences Mass. Crowded spaces, loud noises, or unexpected movements may heighten feelings of anxiety. Fear of being misunderstood or judged can create barriers to participating in parish life.
A sensory-friendly Mass offers a setting that can be especially supportive. The gentler pace, lower volume, and more relaxed environment can help reduce stress and make it easier to focus on prayer. It sends a powerful message: you are not alone, and you belong here.
How can we be more welcoming?
- Lead with compassion. You may not see someone’s struggles, but your kindness can make all the difference.
- Respect personal space. Some people may not wish to shake hands—be understanding.
- Avoid assumptions. Mental health challenges can affect anyone.
- Pray for one another. Include those facing mental health struggles in your personal intentions.
When we create spaces where those with mental health challenges feel safe and welcomed, we reflect Christ’s mercy in a powerful way.
